Free Recycling (Waste Reduction) Assembly Programs
for All Kansas Schools

Get Caught Recycling!

The Solid Waste Bureau of Kansas Department of Health and Environment hires Stan to provide his exciting programs free to schools all over the state.

This year (’07-’08) is the tenth year of his contract. As of February 2008, he had visited 112,877 Students and 752 schools. Stan has been all over Kansas with his program. Here is a list of all the schools he's been to in the last ten years.

The Programs:
We strive to improve our program every year so what we offer has evolved over the ten years. We do present at all levels of public school.Kansas - Don't Spoil It! For (’07-’08) we offer schools:

  • Assemblies and classroom presentations on Recycling- for all levels
  • A Workshop on soils and worms for the 4th or 5th grade-
  • A Package of Educational Materials.
  • Support through the web

In-School Programs

For Elementary Schools

We recommend dividing elementary schools into two groups in order to be more age appropriate. The younger students program is usually for K-2 grades and lasts about 30 minutes. Both assemblies feature Stan-The Eco-Troubadour and his fun and educational songs. For the older students we provide a 45-50 minute program built around the 4-R’s, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink. The older student’s assembly touches on resource conservation, energy use, and the big picture view of how our system evolved and how we might improve it. We are also able to offer smaller classroom presentations should all-school assemblies difficult to schedule.

For Middle and High schools

We provide classroom presentations usually to science classes. Often times we will stay all day to reach as many students as possible. Groups of students from multiple classes often gather in a large classroom or a library venue for the presentation. The presentation has a few songs and more lecture than the younger kids program. Stan uses his years of experience as a junior high and high school teacher to good advantage in meeting the interests and “attitude” of today’s young people.

Soils and Worms workshop

We offer this 30 minute session to upper elementary to help meet science objectives on standardized tests. Composting is a great way to reuse and eliminate waste. Soils and worms are important topics in understanding the great cycles of Nature. Students see, feel and smell samples of clay, silt, sand, loam and humus while discussing the part these components play in the make up of soil. Then we have a short time inspecting a colony of red wiggler worms that recycle food scraps into valuable soil conditioner.

Materials Package

For Elementary schools we send an Advance CD with 8 lively songs that we’ll perform live at the assembly. The CD includes four of those songs repeated without Stan’s Vocal track (karaoke) so that the school may use the CD as accompaniment while using the songs for a performance. Also included are lyrics, hand motions, study guides, a poster, and pre-event posters. This year the school also receives a card game, 5 posters and an additional CD titled Rot N’ Roll. In addition each student will receive a bookmark with the Get Caught Recycling logo and Stan’s picture along with the 4-R’s of waste reduction.

Green Teams

The Green Team program was created as a way for people to make a difference by implementing more environmentally responsible practices at work and at school. By putting this program into practice at your school, office, or in your community you can help Kansas lead by example in energy conservation; pollution prevention; resource conservation; and economic development. Concern for the environment is at a all time high. Here is your chance to make a difference. This website will provide you with the tools you need to get started.

A Green Team is a group of volunteers that work to encourage environmental stewardship in our daily routines. Green Teams implement waste reduction, recycling and green purchasing in their place of work, school or community. The Green Team program provides guidelines, ideas, and information to help you make a difference.

Stan will deliver Green Team information to your school. Get more information at www.kansasgreenteams.org
