Kansas City Master Composters Program
Our second workshop of the Kansas City Master Composters Program was held at the Kansas City Zoo February 11,12 and 13th of 1999. We had 12 people complete the entire program with four others who attended some of the sessions. This larger group was very friendly and fit together well. Our discussions were lively and informative. We were able to build our class pile on the zoo grounds with bedding and manure from the Red Barn domestic animals.
Our small class size made the
instruction personal. |
 We enjoyed playing
Compost Gin. |

This simple kiosk gives the pros and cons of the pallet type bin. The instructions were laminiated and then covered with plexiglass. We developed this signage for the zoo in exchange for letting us hold the workshop there. |
| We emptied the bin of its partially finished compost. We left the sticks at the bottom. |

John Bozarth added the soiled animal bedding. The urine is a valuable source of Nitrogen. |
| Larry pointed out the dry green, cottonseed meal. In February, all our green materials are dead and dry. Cottonseed meal has a high nitrogen content and can fire a pile when natural greens are unavailable. |

The Master Composters Program was very rewarding. Urban and suburban areas can benefit greatly from the work of people who can practice and train others in the natural recycling of yard waste. |
